In April 2012, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred in Phuket, Thailand.
As sudden shaking struck, a tsunami warning was issued, and together with local people I desperately ran for higher ground.
Driven by the fear of “not knowing when the tsunami might come,” what surfaced in my mind were images of the massive tsunami that struck eastern Japan in 2011.
“If a tsunami comes now, no one here will survive.”—In that moment, I became strongly aware of the “need for a shelter” as a means to protect lives.These two experiences became the starting point for the development of the tsunami lifeboat shelter “TASCAL.”
At Mizuno Marine, with deep expertise in vessels and lifeboats, we began development with a strong sense of mission: “We will create a shelter that will protect lives—without fail.”

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions about +CAL

What happens if more than the capacity boards?

Because there is ample buoyancy margin, even if up to about 150% of the capacity boards, stability when capsized is not compromised. The design weight per person is 82.5 kg. If you cannot sit in an emergency, keep your posture as low as possible to protect yourself. The door can also be opened and closed.

How can we prevent being swept out to sea by a tsunami?

When a tsunami comes, you may be pushed inland. Before the tsunami stops and begins to recede, tie the anchor rope to the cleat and deploy the anchor to prevent drifting out to sea.

What should we do if we are swept out to sea?

If your phone works, call the Japan Coast Guard at 118. If it does not connect, use the optional distress signal device. If you can see nearby aircraft or vessels, use signal flares and sea dye marker to indicate your location. +CAL comes standard with a reflector to make it easier to appear on radar for early detection. If drifting continues for a long period, refer to the included survival guidance manual and act accordingly.

Will it shake? Will it capsize?

It may shake significantly depending on wave conditions. Prepare motion-sickness medication. Even if it capsizes, it is safe because of the self-righting design that returns it upright.

How is ventilation handled?

It is continuously ventilated. It is designed so that water does not enter even if waves wash over it. If conditions are calm, it is also possible to open the hatch.

Is there a toilet?

+CAL25F includes a private flush toilet. For other models, please prepare an optional simple toilet.

Is there a power supply?

An optional battery USB unit can be installed.
